Pupil's Rights

1. If a learner believes that a misdemeanour slip has been unfairly issued, they may request an interview with the appropriate Grade Tutor.  A decision to retain or cancel the misdemeanour slip will then be made by the Grade Tutor.  In exceptional cases the Executive of the School will be the final arbiter.

2. After one full term without any misdemeanour, 15 demerit points will be deducted from the learner’s total.

3. Demerits obtained in Term 4 are carried over into the following year.

4. The Demerit system runs from Term 4 until the end of the Term 3 the following year.

 

CATEGORY 1                     MINOR                   5 DEMERITS

1.  Uniform default during exams.

2.  3x homework not done.

3.  3x late for school.

CATEGORY 2                     MAJOR              15 DEMERITS EACH + 1 DETENTION

1.  Insulting or rude behaviour / swearing / insolence.

2.  Deliberately misleading teachers / lying.

3.  Disruptive or offensive behaviour.

4.  Not attending a 1 hour detention.

5.  Bunking academic classes.

6.  Extremely offensive/dangerous/immodest behaviour/vandalism/threatening behaviour.

7.  Bringing the name of the school in disrepute.

8.  Cheating + parents contacted.

9.  Gambling.

CATEGORY 3                MAJOR            20 DEMERITS + GDE INFORMED

1.  Bullying / verbal / sexual harassment:  immediate 2-day exclusion from school  and all activities.

2.  Truancy:  afternoon Community Service, 2 hours per day – truant.

3.  Fighting:  immediate 2-day exclusion from school and all activities.

4.  Smoking/using hubbly bubbly: immediate 2-day exclusion from school and all activities.

5.Use/possession of alcohol: immediate 2-day exclusion from school and activities.

6.  Forgery: immediate 2-day exclusion from school and all activities.

7.  Racist behaviour: immediate 2-day exclusion from school and all activities.

CATEGORY 4    CRIMINAL OFFENCES 60 DEMERITS

Criminal offences committed at school, or anywhere in school uniform:  Violent assault, rape, major vandalism, theft, possession/use of weapons, drugs.  GDE informed, and pupils to be sent for counselling/rehab.  The School may open a case with the SAPS.
