Academic Accolades

1. The Accolade System at Edenvale High School aims to reward academic endeavour and to encourage a culture of hard work at school studies.

2. The system operates along with the Demerit System but they are recorded in a separate file from the demerits.  Accolades do not cancel out demerits.

3. Accolades do not reward homework or positive attitude, because these are either expected of learners or there are other rewards in place in the form of letters to parents and Meritorious Service scrolls.  The accent is on improvement and excellence rather than consistency.

4. Accolades are awarded by individual teachers, for effort or improvement in classwork, written or oral communication, class tests, teamwork, skill or expected outcomes.

The criteria for Accolades must necessarily be at the discretion of the teacher.

JUNIORS – GRADE 8 AND 9

3 accolades will be awarded for the following:

a. Test or exam over 80%

b. An improvement of 10% provided the mark is a pass.  (if a pupil improves by 20% he/she will be awarded with 6 accolades etc)

c. Excellent work as judged by the teacher.  For this 3 accolades may only be awarded after 3 cycles.

SENIORS – GRADE 10, 11 AND 12

5 accolades are awarded at a time

a. Tests or exam marks over 75%

b. Same as for b. and c. above.

Accolade points will be carried over from one year to the next.

5. Each teacher keeps a record of Accolades in a mark book.

At 10 Accolades the teacher fills out a special letter to the parents/guardians of the learner.  A copy is sent for recording in the Accolades File.

At 60 Accolades, a Special Merit Letter is prepared by the Standard Tutor for announcement at assembly.

At 100 Accolades, the learner is awarded a R50 cash prize, to be presented at assembly.

The responsibility for making tallies for Accolades is that of the person who files Demerits and Accolades.
